Fitzgerald’s 1928: Food for Thought

We all know some of the best things in life are free, but it’s rare to encounter an organization so completely dedicated to that idea. If you are a writer, or an aspiring writer, or just someone with a story to tell (which is everyone) and you don’t know about The Write Group of Montclair, don’t stop reading now.

At Fitzgerald’s 1928, I happened to run into two of The Write Group’s torch-bearers – Harriet Cutler Halpern and Carl Selinger.  Together, we went over the group’s lineup of programs for the upcoming month.  They’re numerous and varied.  What they hold in common is the basic definition of a writer as “anyone who writes” – and the commitment to support in its many specific formats the writing of anyone with the will, courage and discipline to get it done.  Most activities are hosted in the Montclair Public Library, 50 South Fullerton Avenue.  All are free.

Here are some of this month’s scheduled meetings:  two different Memoir Groups; Novelist Group; Poetry Study Group; Short Story/Essay Group; Free Write Workshops where writers respond to prompts; the always insightful Reading Like a Writer Group; guest workshops like this month’s “Six Word Memoir Workshop” and “Performing Your Writing Workshop.” The monthly Write Group Showcase & Open Mic gives writers the chance to read their work before an audience; this month’s Showcase is March 13 in the Montclair Library Auditorium, Open Mic sign-up at 6:45PM.

Now in its 15th year, The Write Group is both historic and encyclopedic in scope.  Harriet and Carl are modest about their roles, reminding everyone at that The Write Group leadership is always organic and shared, that it is a group of groups where everyone participates and contributes.  The torches they hold give light and heat – knowledge and passion – the combination you need to succeed in any pursuit.

Harriet is a teacher and Carl a transportation engineer by trade ( – like the group at large, they’re about learning things and going places and the firm belief that writing will transport you – doing it, reading it, hearing it.
